10 minutes.
Freezing water.
Stage 4 hypothermia.
CPR.
11 poor helpless creatures.
A mother's tears.
All of this can only add up to one thing. A near death experience for 11 of the newest members of our family. Lets go back to the beginning.
Exactly 8 days ago, my mom became a new mother, minus the nine month agonizing period of time with a bloated stomach. How is this possible you may ask?? She is a mother hen without feathers. Our chicks hatched. Happy day, they have been a blessing right from the start and we have been so tickled that they were sent to our home. Since the time of their arrival they have been dwelling in our kitchen in a box, however yesterday my parents took a trip to the dump to drop off some junk and they came home with some more. Aka, a chicken cage, and the chicks were introduced to their permanent home, the great outdoors. This is where the tragedy begins.
The day started out like normal, me and Sarah slept outside under the stars and Mom came and woke us up so she could turn on the sprinklers. We went inside, moseyed about for about a half an hour when Mom jumped up and started yelling something about sprinklers, chicks, and ten minutes. She was nearly in tears when we were finally able to comprehend. The baby chicks were out on the lawn, at the mercy of the relentless sprinklers.
When we ran out we were horrified to find that they were soaked to the bone, shivering balls of meat laying in a deformed pile!! They were all mostly dead, at most only 3% alive, and we had little hope of reviving any of them. We pulled out lamps, blow dryers, and towels to begin the process of resurrection for these helpless little babes. Picking up the chicks out of the cage there were many we wondered if they were even a little alive, but not having time to worry we began the life saving technique of CPR. Sarah started CPR, passed it to me and I wiped it with a towel, and passed in down to Mom who was blow drying her little heart out why trying to see through a river of tears. Now, nearly two hours later, the deformed pile of wet feathers has transformed to fluffy clean little chicks again. We asked Mom how she felt about the whole thing and all she could say was, "Heavenly Father maded them feel better."
